I was thinking the same thing! Even if your version permits fruit (mine does not), apparently muddling was foreign to these mountain men. Nevermind the myopia of anyone who could actually claim that there "never will be a whiskey" blah blah blah, or that grammatically speaking, "Roses" possessive would be Roses's, which would be forgivable if the cocktail were right. In modern times, we would call this a "fail."

Interesting that they consider a regular martini with Sweet Vermouth & I would assume the Dry version has both Sweet (italian) and Dry (French). One big step closer to a Martinez cocktail for sure.

I love that you mentioned Drinking Diaries. I am a young man with no intentions of having children, yet I enjoy Drinking Diaries very much. It is the only website / blog that I think deals with the positives and negatives of drinking in a balanced and mature way. It doesn't promote alcohol abuse, but it also lacks the characteristic "more than 2 drinks a day is alcoholism" vibe of many sites.

It shows great perspective for (and from) everyone ranging from teetotalers to drunks.

LOVE this blog post and comments thread.

I recently developed a taste for manhattans and just went out to buy all of the ingredients to make them at home. Googled "How much is a dash?" and voila! 15 minutes of entertainment and a confirmation of my original idea to just flick the Ango bottle into the shaker. (And also the useful tip to wash and reuse said Ango bottle once it's empty.)

Thank you. You're helping people.

Thank you for any light that you can shed on this tray!

I specifically address that: I use about 1/8th teaspoon.

Another solution is to use an empty dasher bottle; once you've polished off your Angostura or something, wash it well and reuse it for your vermouth or whatnot.

Dashing bitters is all very well, but what about recipes that call for a dash of something in a bottle that doesn't have a tiny hole? I want to build a drink called Arsenic & Old Lace and it demands a dash of both French Vermouth and Creme de Violet. I think we need precise (or relatively precise) measures so that, as one experiments and adjusts a cocktail to get it to one's particular liking, one can then reproduce the results in future.
