I was just invited to go to Seattle for the barsmarts program and am taking the CSS exam, through the Society of Wine Educators, next month. I was thinking not to go up to Seattle for the barsmarts program (and to only do the CSS exam - as the two seem to overlap on a lot of information and the CSS seems a lot more comprehensive). The barsmarts porgram sounded slightly infantile when I was reading the pitch on it, but your post makes it sound very worthwhile. So thank you, I do believe I have changed my mind.

I finished BarSmarts Wired last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. It provides a great foundation that any professional barman should have. I would love for the guys behind it to give some focus to profitability and the numbers behind the management part of the bar. Too many bartenders have too little grasp on the dollars.

Having taken the BarSmarts Advanced, just a quick note that the blind tasting isn't simply identifying the spirits.

The last 15 or 20 questions of your written exam are about the spirits in the glasses in front of you. Granted, if you can identify them, it'll help you answer the questions, but it will be more like, "Glass 2 is typically aged in what kind of wood?"

Also be sure to take your tools with you, as not all tools will be provided at the location for the practical part of the exam. I took my entire kit and was glad I did.
