There is something about an old-fashioned
That kindles a cardiac glow;
It is soothing and soft and impassioned
As a lyric by Swinburne or Poe.
There is something about an old-fashioned
When dusk has enveloped the sky,
And it may be the ice,
Or the pineapple slice*,
But I strongly suspect it’s the rye†.
–From “A Drink with Something in It,” by Ogden Nash

†Dear God, yes.

Awwww, don’t fear the pineapple slice. Old-fashioned whiskey cocktails could decorated with all kinds of fruit on top (not muddled of course). Made them worth the extra nickel.
If your Old Fashioned is sweet, there’s nothing wrong with muddled fruit in ti, either. At least not here, in the capital of Old Fashioneds. I don’t know what you Eastern types do to them.
Don’t get me started on the muddled-fruit topic!
